A further field beneath cutting and joining technologies is the art of forming. One example for mechanical processing that brings a component in the desired shape is precise robot milling. Therefore a blade with a defined geometry cuts material away by means of a rotational motion. Industrial robots can not only take over handling and machine-tending tasks, but can also serve as machine tools. One of the core competencies of KUKA Systems is the precise machining of carbon- and glass fiber-reinforced plastic components. Building on our existing experience, we are developing an integrated approach. This entails not only the integration and further development of the process itself but also of the user interface and a range of calibration processes to achieve highest possible precision. Current applications range from stationary operation to multiple machining. Mobile robot operation is already in the pipeline.
